Professional Bio

Dr Ben Saxon is the Medical Director, Policy and Education at Australian Red Cross Lifeblood and Medical Unit Head, Paediatric Haematology and Oncology at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, North Adelaide. He was trained in both Australia and Canada and his clinical practice covers paediatric haematology, oncology and transfusion medicine. 

He was awarded fellowships from the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia, and has published in peer-review journals, books and clinical websites. He is also a journal reviewer for Transfusion & Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health.

Dr Saxon holds academic and society appointments, including being a member of the AABB committee for distance education. His awards include: ANZSBT Peter Schiff Award for significant contributions to transfusion medicine; Excellence in Postgraduate Education, Development and Innovation from the University of Toronto, Faculty of Medicine; and the Professor Derek Frewin AO Citation for Clinical Teaching, School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Adelaide. 

His interests include blood clotting, bleeding problems, patient blood management and medical education.
